BARCODES FOR GREETING CARDS

The requirements for a barcode for greeting cards differ slightly from the standard UPC bar coding for other retail products. The reason for this deviation is that the greeting card industry requires a very large quantity of unique barcodes for the many different greeting card designs.

The image above shows a barcode for a greeting card.

The 12-digit barcode on the left is the standard UPC barcode. It identifies the sale of one single loose greeting card of greeting card company XYZ. Every single loose greeting card of company XYZ available for sale features this same 12-digit UPC code.

What differs from one card design to another is the barcode on the right. This barcode is referred to as the greeting card supplemental (bar)code and identifies the various designs. For example company X may have 00001 to identify their funny father's day card with the blue balloon picture and have 00002 on the serious get well card with the flower picture and have 00003 on yet another design.

When a greeting card is scanned at the register of your retailer the scanner reads the 12-digit UPC code and knows that it is dealing with a single loose card from greeting card company XYZ. However, only once the scanner picks up the 5-digit supplemental code does the computer know which particular design of card has been sold. This helps the retailer keep accurate inventory data, know how well/poorly any one of your designs is selling, and when restocking/reordering is needed.

If you are purchasing barcodes for greeting cards then you will therefore need only one UPC barcode to identify your loose single cards. In addition to this UPC you will need as many greeting card supplemental codes as you have greeting card designs. This is to your benefit because the greeting card supplemental codes are much cheaper than the UPC codes. Therefore, this system reduces your overall cost by not forcing you to put a different UPC code on every design. (Retailers only extend this exception to you for your single loose cards. Box sets do not qualify for the greeting card supplemental system. Any box sets of greeting cards that you sell must have their own unique UPC codes. )
