UPC Codes for Selling Products on Amazon

It's true! Amazon.com now requires barcodes for all of the products they carry. Most items require UPC codes but in some cases ISBN barcodes are required. This guide is designed to help you make sense of the alphabet soup and assist you in preparing your items for sale at Amazon.

Amazon.com states efficiency is the reason why they have this new requirement.

As you can imagine, as Amazon distributes so many items through their fulfillment centers with each item handled numerous times there is room for error. Amazon aims to increase accuracy, speed up the time needed to get your product in the hand of buyers, and streamline inventory/sales reporting by adopting barcodes across the board.

Here is how we can help you meet some of Amazon's compliance guidelines…

Amazon: A barcode is a symbol that allows an optical scanning tool to identify the product or book title. Simply Barcodes: Amazon requires that all non-book products carry at UPC barcode (Universal Product Code). We are the most visited and preferred site to safely buy official and legal UPC barcodes. You can order your UPC codes here.

Book products to be sold on Amazon should carry an ISBN barcode (International Standard Book Number). You can order ISBN numbers from the Bowker agency. We recommend that you also place a UPC code on your book to allow for the possibility of selling it through regular retailers in addition to traditional bookstores.
Amazon: The barcode of product type must scan to an original ISBN or UPC number. If you get a new ISBN or UPC number, you must get a new ISBN or UPC barcode. Simply Barcodes: In order for your retailer to properly identify your products in their inventory management system, a different UPC barcode is required for each product. For example, if you are selling a picture frame in two different colors each in small, medium, and large, then you will need six different UPC codes.

For books, if your book changed enough to warrant a new ISBN number then you need a new ISBN barcode as well as a new UPC (if you followed our advice to also feature a UPC code on your book).
Amazon: To ensure proper scanning, bar codes should be tested with a full ANSI-certified verifier. Simply Barcodes: We use ANSI-certified Motorola Symbol equipment to test-scan all barcode label orders. Simply Barcodes strongly recommends test-scanning any UPC code prototype produced by your manufacturing facility before going into mass production.
Amazon: If you print your own UPC barcodes, be aware that defects may reduce scannability. Simply Barcodes: We are barcode experts. Each order of barcode labels that we print for you is printed to the recommended specifications of the barcode equipment manufacturers and is test-scanned to verify proper scannability. Most local print shops have no experience with the unique requirements of barcode printing. If you would like to order pre-printed barcode labels, please click label printing.
Amazon: Bar codes should be printed with black ink on a white background, and there must be 1/4-inch of white space on the left and right sides of your bar code. Simply Barcodes: We offer four choices of verified scannable barcode labels.

Amazon: If your bar code does not scan, you will be liable for non-compliance charges. Simply Barcodes: To avoid this problem, have us create your barcodes or, at least, hire us to test-scan your own output before going into mass-production.
Amazon: New CDs and DVDs should always be shrink-wrapped differentiating them from used copies. Bar code must scan through any protective packaging. Simply Barcodes: If you doubt scanability of your barcode through case plastic plus the shrink-wrapping or poly-wrapping due to thickness or poor quality, we can help with barcode labels that you can place on top of the wrap.
